Global giant Mastercard recently conducted a survey, the results of which were announced yesterday. They say that up to 93% of consumers are considering new payment methods, such as biometrics, QR code, or digital currencies. When the world closed in 2020, consumers around the world were forced to change their habits. They started to use online shopping much more and to use cash much less. However, the same applies to retailers around the world as well, who have moved their business online and started exploring the potential of new online payment methods. The whole process has been researched by Mastercard and it took more than one year to finish. The survey tells us from the title that the use of new payment technologies is constantly increasing, as this announcement is entitled “Consumer Appetite for Digital Payments Takes Off.”
However, this survey was not conducted locally but in up to 18 markets around the world and took the form of online interviews with 15,569 respondents, which we can rely on its relevance. But let’s get to the results. As many as 63% of respondents said that pandemic forced them to try new and more flexible payment options, and as many as 93% of people plan to consider using modern payment methods such as contactless payments, biometrics, QR code, or cryptocurrencies within a year. It is clear to all of us that blockchain technology and thus cryptocurrencies stand out the most in this list, thanks to which the next part focused mainly on crypto. Here we can see interesting information that says that up to 40% of respondents from North America, Latin America, and the Caribbean, the Middle East, Asia Pacific, and Africa have expressed interest in the use of cryptocurrencies.
In terms of demographic data, the survey focused mainly on millennials (people born between 1981 and 1996). Up to 67% of them say that they are more than open to the use of this technology today than a year ago and up to 77% expressed interest in learning in this area, as up to 75% of respondents say that when they understand this technology, they are more likely to start using it.
